In Luke's account (10:38-42) Jesus praises a model meditation (Maria) over another of enterprise, generosity, action (Mars). In the Jewish culture would appear anachronistic to speak of meditation practice and concept that arises then from the Hellenic-Christian mysticism. The knees of Mary should be interpreted as a traditional gesture of courtesy and hospitality, not like the stereotype of the listener and / or meditate. The words of Jesus appear therefore as the advice of a good teacher, psychologist, teacher. For Christ Mary appeared much quieter, but definitely less productive than Martha can take time for himself.
To truly understand the text in the original perspective one needs to understand the EXPLANATOR that led Luke to describe such a glimpse of family life. The purpose of the evangelist was to call his neo-Christian community to observe the Jewish Sabbath, or help maintain the traditional day to devote to the rest settimanle any physical effort.
How can this look modern and contemporary appeal of Luke in a society like ours where time is consumed and the stress of Sunday is the same as that of the Sabbath and other days of the week? Those of us who usually stops listening to classical music, read a few pages thick to meditate or flees to a secluded place to enjoy the peaceful nature and peaceful?
